Just four weeks
before the longest day of the year but the weather for round two
of the BPKC Summer Championship at Buckmore Park was more akin
to the autumn equinox than the summer solstice.
First onto the circuit today were
the mixed ranks of the cadet classes. Jack Aitken had the upper
hand in the heats with two wins and a second. He must have been
looking to break his duck for final wins at Buckmore. All went
well until the very last lap when he spun from the lead and let
George Wright through to the win. Callum Hardgrave may not have
collected a trophy for his third place but certainly drove well
enough both in the heats and the final. Brett Ward took the novice
trophy from eighth.
The comer heats produced three
different winners with Ashlee Whiteman, James Raven and Jake Dalton
all taking a turn at the front. In the final it was the usual
close race in which Jake Dalton emerged as victor after 12 hard
fought laps. Just a whisker behind him was James Raven for the
remaining class trophy. Ashlee Whiteman crossed for third.
As usual it was the Rotax grid
that provided the biggest entry and it was good to see enough
177 entrants to make a race this month. Lee Jenner got the day
underway with a win in heat one from James Park but those positions
were then reversed in heat two. Heat three had more than its fair
share of DNF’s and produced a new winner, Kit Brough. The
two main protagonists were back for the final where Lee Jenner
did the 12 lap lights to flag thing in style. A DNF in heat three
left James Park a little down the order but by lap four he was
back on the tail of Jenner but unable to find a way round him.
Kit Brough also drove a blinder to take third, just ahead of Joe
Bailey. Oliver Alam had a much better meeting this month and picked
up the novice trophy. The 177 class could well have been called
the Dave Wooder show, so dominant was this talented driver. If
Wooder was the star then top support act was John Williams.
It has to be said; I love the
sound of the Biland and having had a little play in one a couple
of years ago, do love the feel of the beast from the drivers’
seat as well. Jordan Pike, Keiran Brookfield and Robert Gilford
all deserve a mention as heat winners as does Anwar Beroual-Smith
for always being there or thereabouts. In the final Keiran Brookfield
had the upper hand for a lap while Robert Gifford made his way
past traffic but by lap three Gifford led the pack and retained
this advantage to the chequered flag. Steve Bell missed the trophies
by a whisker as he chased Brookfield home.
Junior Testosterone, (sorry, Max),
again produced very close racing across the big entry. There were
three different heat winners, always a good recipe for an exciting
final in my opinion. Robert Foster-Jones took heat one and this
win was followed by Harry Drysdale taking heat two and Luciano
Bacheta the remaining race. The final was a gameof two halves
in which Sam Hart dominated the first and Harry Drysdale the second.
James Colburn ran shotgun and waited in vain for a mistake by
either to gift him another place. At the flag it was Drysdale,
Hart and Colburn with a second between them. James Openheimer
took the novice award.
Paul Janes looked strongest in
the TKM heats with two wins to his credit, the other winner being
Damian Hickmam, but in the final it was all change as Matthew
Parr snatched the lead on lap nine and then showed the pack the
way home. Damian Hickman crossed virtually alongside for the runners
up award and Paul Janes had to be content with the points for
third, but no trophy this month.
The two driving forces in Mini
Max at the moment are Tom Ingram and James Doherty and this month
they simply took it in turns to win, though there was no collusion
in this, simply very closely matched talent. Elliot Rice was Mr
Consistent in the heats, taking third on each outing. In a brilliantly
entertaining final James Doherty certainly had the upper hand
on the wet circuit and he led for eleven of the dozen laps. Tom
Ingram virtually matched his lap times and took a well deserved
second. Oliver Varney had a fair bit to do as he started this
final but proved it ain’t over till the fat lady sings.
He got his head down and drove a blinder for the remaining trophy.
He couldn’t afford to relax for a moment either because
Joe Hilling was right on his tail throughout.
