Buckmore Park Winter Championship Rd 2

Rain late in the day on Saturday and a wet forecast for race day ensured competitors for round 2 of the BPKC Winter Championship were able to test for the right conditions. A decent entry in every class boded well for some good close racing. With just three rounds, the Winter championship is a friendly, club based series that reminds me of the old days when everyone was racing for fun on their day off work or school.

George Wright was certainly on form in Honda Cadet. Second to Jack Aitken in heat one and then an outright win on his second outing Wright went into the final as favourite. Aitken held the lead for a lap but Wright soon moved ahead and hung on to the final flag leaving Aitken the silver. Callum Hardgrave enjoyed a close fight with Liam Jones. The latter had the edge, then lost it to Hardgrave, but bided his time and retook the place on the final lap.

It was good to see enough Comers’ for a decent race this month. The heats were equally split between Ashlee Whiteman and Jacob Stilp with Sam Vanderpump collecting a third each time. In the final Stilp pulled a massive lead and took the chequer a full quarter of a minute ahead of Whiteman. Russell Danzey got ahead of Vanderpump for third.

Junior Max was interesting as no one driver dominated the class. There were heat wins for Robert Browning and Jack Saffery but when it came to the big points in the final it was Kenneth Andrews who delivered the result. Browning came off the start in front but Andrews soon took charge and led the pack for the remaining eleven laps. Browning took second but achieved a slightly faster best lap. Bradley Smith came home for third with Harry Drysdale a distant fourth.

Elliot Burton dominated the Junior TKM Intermediate heats, both with over four seconds to spare. On both occasions it was Danny Drew who crossed for second. What a different race the final turned out to be! Here Sam Sheehan took the lead from Burton on lap one and stormed off to build an eight second lead. Michael Coomber came home in third. Joe Porter took the Junior TKM crown after a close battle with Lindsay Butcher.

Junior TKM 4 stroke is fast becoming an exciting class as more and more drivers move into the class. Heat one provided some excitement straight away when front runner Tom Truscott got excluded from the result for coming in underweight. Rhys Jenkins took the first heat win and Oliver Bourton the second. The final was one of the most exciting of the afternoon as Rhys Jenkins held the lead for the lion’s share of the race before losing out to Oliver Bourton on lap nine. Sean Babington was a very close third as the race reached its conclusion.

Mini Max is a personal favourite of mine at the moment as so many of the current batch of drivers are graduates from the Sisley Kart School. If one driver dominated the class this round it was Lewis Hall with wins on all three outings. James Doherty, Elliot Rice and Tom Ingram were the drivers who played second fiddle to the maestro on each occasion. Yet again Oliver Varney was up there at the sharp end and only just missed a podium appearance. Tom Howard collected the Novice award and I was gratified to see novice Jody Fannin staying much more in touch with the pack this month.

If the Mini Max class is home to recent Kart School graduates then Rotax is now the stomping ground for a handful of old boys (and girls). Heat one was particularly close and after ten hard fought laps the victory went to Lee Jenner from Ed Cockill by two tenths. Sam Smithson did the business in race two and again had both Cockill’s close behind. Ed Cockill led off the line in the final but lost the place to Sam Smithson on lap three. Harry Cockill came through for second place and Chris Matthews collected the remaining class trophy. That is not strictly true though as Ricky Coomber picked up the novice trophy.

Since the move to TKM extreme in 2005 the class has been revitalised and once more provides the smoke and excitement for which it is famous. Barnaby Pittingale got the ball rolling with a win in heat one but he finished at the other end of the order next time out. This time it Will Bullard who was first to the flag. Will then came off the front of the grid to produce one of those lights to flag victories that every driver dreams of. His lead was also enormous by the end of twelve laps; in fact it had extended by one second a lap! Like Caudle led the best of the rest for the silver. Jake Packun just snuck over the line ahead of Daniel Graham to complete the class podium.
