Buckmore Park Winter Championship Rd 3

The short BPKC winter Championship was wrapped up on the 19th March on a dry but bitterly cold Buckmore Park. The entry was lower than usual as a fair number of drivers had put the championship to bed a month earlier and were conserving their efforts for the new eight round Summer Series which starts in April.

Jack Aitken dominated Honda Cadet with two heat wins and a second place but in a very close final it was Callum Hardgrave who took the flag by a whisker from Aitken. Spencer Peacock took third a split second later. This made Aitken the Winter Champion and with a single point deficit Hardgrave took the runner up award. Connor Mills collected the novice Championship trophy after three top scores.

Ashlee Whiteman was unstoppable in Comers with three heat wins and a big safety margin in the final. He secures the series crown by eleven points. Sam Vanderpump took second in each of the heats but when it mattered it was Abigail Smith who did the business and took the runner up slot in the final.

I always find it far more exciting when there is a different winner in each heat and this was the case in Junior Max. First it was Sam Hart, then Bradley Smith, then Harry Drysdale, all looking good for an exciting final. Adding to the interest was series contender Robert Foster-Jones who was collecting very useful points. The final found Sam Hart victorious after a good battle with Harry Drysdale. Foster-Jones came home for third after snatching the place on the last lap. This was going to make the arithmetic close. The battle had all been for second place as Kenneth Andrews had done enough in the first two rounds to secure the crown. Just one point separated the next two contenders with Harry Drysdale having the advantage over Robert Foster-Jones.

Junior TKM 4/ shared the tarmac with the Mini Max grid this month but for clarity let us look at the four stroke class first. Sean Babington took two of the heat wins with Marcus Carvalho securing the other. The final was a great head to head battle between Carly Latcham and Macus Carvalho. Latcham got the upper hand early on, lost out to Carvalho a lap or two later then stayed very much in touch to the flag. Rhys Jenkins was absent this round but secures the series trophy.

The table was pretty close at the top of the Mini Max class and the main protagonists were on hand to take the fight to the wire. Heat one went to Lewis Hall, the next race to James Doherty and the third to Tom Ingram. This made things even closer. The final was eagerly awaited. For the first half of the race it looked as though Lewis Hall would have it, but then Tom Ingram slipped ahead and made it stick all the way to the final flag. James Doherty took a close third. So, what effect had this exciting race had on the standings? Tom Ingram secured the crown by two points from Lewis Hall. The novice champion in this class was Oliver Morris-Jones.

In Rotax it was a very relaxed Ed Cockill who went out and won all three heats. The championship was in the bag if he could simply finish in the top three of the final, so the pressure was off. His nearest competition was Lee Jenner, who finished second twice, and his brother Harry. Other possible challengers were James Park and Chris Matthews, both on good form today. Ed Cockill was pretty laid back in the final and while he stayed right in touch with race leader Lee Jenner, there was no pressing need to pass and Cockill was content to cross a split second later but with the series in his pocket. Chris Matthews drove a fine race and came home in third. So, with Cockill established as Champion, the other podium finishers were Lee Jenner and Harry Cockill. Ricky Coomber cleaned up in the novice championship.

The new season gets underway next month and promises the usual excitement this eight round series delivers.
